Water Heater intermittent Issues

The dometic WH has been working good but occasionally the electrical side is intermittent. I can turn on the gas the electric will turn on and both will be working properly. Turn off the gas and the electric will also quit working. Had this happen before & I replaced the thermostat and it worked ok for a few days then it started the intermittent stuff again. Cleaned & tightened all ground wires and checked the yellow wire for the 120 volts it was working, so I checked operation again it has worked fine for a couple of weeks. Now it is working intermittent again. I have a new relay and control board to try and see if one of those solves the problem. Have any of you folks had similar issues? Open for suggestions.
Thanks Ralph

Hey Ralph - sounds like you checked the wiring and voltages and thermostat already. If the new control board doesn’t prove to be the solution, it could be the electric heating element itself going bad. This can go bad especially if they are used without water in the tank.

Another thing to check would be to see if there is excessive scale buildup inside the tank and the heating element. If you have a endoscope you could drain the tank and use that to view the interior of the tank to confirm. Then give it a good cleaning and flush.

If that doesn’t work, the solution is probably to replace the electric heating element. Here’s a video showing the process to replace the element.

Okay thanks Stuart, I had ohm checked the element and it measured good. I had done a flush on one of the earlier failures. I think I will try the board and if not the relay or vice versus and see how that works. I will report back once I am sure it is reliable.
Thanks

Ok guys I changed the relay first but no different results. Changed the circuit board electric and gas systems worked properly the first time. Now to give it some time and see if it’s reliable??
Thanks Ralph

Well the water heater is still working as it should be so far. But I’m not convinced that it’s going to be reliable yet?? I thought I had it fixed before but not so. So I just wanted to update the thread. Will check back later.

Okay folks I will say that the WH is reliable and is working correctly for now. I will report back later if it happens again. I will say it was the control board that solved the problem.
Thanks
Ralph

Thanks for the update Ralph - Always good to see the resolution to issues that are posted. Glad to hear its working.
