I have a 2019 Vilano 370 GB that weighs 14K pounds dry and 16K pounds loaded (according to the sticker) with standard brakes. I am pulling it with a 2023 Chevy 3500 Crew Cab Long Bed diesel dually with a Chevy integral brake controller that came with the truck as an OEM option. I am wondering what controller setting (gain) others are using for similar trailers or loads? Mine is currently set at 50% and seems to be controlling the trailer well so this information is just curiosity.
I don’t have a GM product, but assuming the TBC on yours is somewhat similar to the Ford offering.
On mine, I have the effort set to medium (Low, Medium & High scale) and the gain set to 6-6.5 (out of 1-10 scale). Our Vanleigh also has disc brakes, which don’t have the adjustments a drum brake has . If you have drum brakes on the trailer, it’s important to make sure they are properly adjusted, and not just increase the gain to make up for unadjusted drum brakes.
That gives us good braking response and performance. The trailer brakes pretty evenly/balanced with the truck brake application. Too much braking or not enough on the trailer side can cause some problems.
I have a GMC dually and mines set to 6.5ish as I recall.
FWIW a good starting point based on my experience is driving at 10ish mpg on gravel manually trip your trailer brakes…they should lock up and slow the whole rig.
23 GMC 3500HD, 41LKB AT ~18.5k. Control set to 7. I test this each underway to ensure it stops the rig without using the truck brakes.
