I’m looking to put a used Onin generator in my 2018 VanLeigh Valano, front compartment. Is there a kit for the wiring, fuel (gas or propane, and the exhaust to mount everything?
I am not sure about your year and model. I know the 2022 320gk could be ordered with a generator prep. If yours has the prep that would be a head start.
Your best bet for the fuel source, unless you do a bunch of boondocking, would be propane. Think about how much will you use it. Gas will not remain stable, no matter what stabill product or how much of it you use.
I have had an emergency generator for 5 years. Last year was the only year that I truly needed it. I put about 6 times the amount of ethanol staybill shield that was recommended, and yet, when I really needed it. I found myself spending a Day and 1/2 cleaning out the fuel system, removing the carburetor, cleaning it out to include the small jet ports. Then once I finally get it put back together, have to adjust it, find the “happy spot” between full load, and light load demand.
I have had propane tanks that have sat for years, I have never had a tank go bad .
I kicked myself after thinking about it, and would use propane compared to gas.
Even though it is twice the cost, diesel is still the ultimate choice. They run quieter, consume less fuel, and even though the fuems may make your eyes burn, it will not kill you like the gas will. That’s exactly why they use diesel in mining operations.
Just food for thought.
Continuing the discussion from the Retrofit generator: I’m thinking propane as the fuel for many reasons, but it’s mainly the wiring harness I’m looking for. Is there a ready-made harness available?
Onan offers a duel fuel generator will use gasoline or propane. I have saw many installation kits offered with different harness and controls. You would have to run the wires etc. You will need a Auto transfer switch as well. E-Trailer offers everything you would need and customer service is very helpful. For example Onan offers a Bluetooth option see link https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Cummins-Onan/CM96MR.html
Thanks for the information. That’s what I needed.
Its not my specialty but I try.
