Hey Bob -
The blinds are made by Irvine Shade in Elkhart. From your description I am guessing your spring is bad in the blind. You can get replacement springs from Irvine or their reseller (Jackie 602-321-9986). Irvine had been great in supplying free springs when I was up in Elkhart so I always carried some spares. I know several other folks that were shipped free springs from Irvine but also have heard folks are getting directed to Jackie recently.
They have video tutorials on their site for adjusting the blinds and replacing springs. That clip will pop loose with a screwdriver. Those guys at Tish showed me how to remove the blinds without removing the valance - tight fit if you have bigger hands like I do but you may not have to remove the blinds the next time once you see how they work.
Here is a link to their site with some video tutorials for adjusting and replacing springs.
Thanks Ryan for the information & video
Like Ryan said the retract spring has broken on that shade. The side contains the limiting mechanism to adjust the height and retract speed / force.
I’ve got a few springs as spares as I’ve had to replace 4 or 5 of them over the past few years. When getting replacement springs be sure to provide the width of the shades as the wider ones require a larger/stronger spring.
Removing the smaller shades is easier as there are only two clips holding them in and can be removed without removing the valance as Ryan mentioned. The larger ones have either 3 or 4 clips holding them on and I found it easier than to remove the valance to access the clips. Made it easier to attach them back too.
What is the trick to release the clips? Must be a two or 3 person job since there are 4 clips.
As you have found those clips are spring loaded. On both small and large shades I push the blind toward the wall and release the clip on one side using a large screwdriver to push in the clip and tilt the blind out of the clip and then work the other side. I did the same on the larger blind working my way down the clips.
On the larger blinds it is helpful (valance up or down) to have a helper as your work your way down the clips.
I looked around here for a clip as I had a few of those and would make it easier to demonstrate but couldn’t chase one down.
Thanks Ryan, that galley see through shade was fully down so as you & Stuart mentioned, the spring must have broken downing down the smooth Interstate roads! The shade was fully extended.
I’ll contact the company as you suggested.
The galley shade rail is 61.5” & measures 62” outside wheel to outside.
Thanks again
Bob
Ryan,
Thanks for the information. I recently lost both the day and night shades on the small dinette window and the night shade on the large dinette window. The problem I have with the small window is that both shades have come off the rollers so I will have to align the shades and hope they roll up correctly or I will need to replace.
I will be in contact with Irvine Shade on Monday for new springs.
Just as an FYI, the springs are available through the Allegro Club Prices aren’t too bad. It does take a little searching through the parts section. Not identified real well.
Good find on the drawing!
I had my one of my shades come off the roller and I think in our case was due to hyperextension. The folks at Irvine offered to repair the blind for free but stated they use a thin double sided tape to get the blind back on the roller and then roll it back up. I did the repair on a few blinds that had this issue.
Once you get the blind stuck to the roller, and on straight (a bit key) - when the blind is extended there should be enough material still holding onto the tube. I was told that we probably hyperextended the blind causing the blind to pull off the roller if that makes sense.
Yup, both of the small shades were over extended. I made the mistake of pulling them down further trying to get them to go back up. I figured they were on the rollers OK. When I heard that springs were available figured I would go that way.
Well we traveled with them that way this spring and when I pushed out the slide, both were laying on the chair. What I found is that the entire rollers are still very sticky and both shades have a strip about 2 1/2" wide that is also very sticky. I am hoping that there is still enough adhesive to glue the shades down. When looking at everything, I figured they had used a double sided tape. Looking at the Irvine site confirmed the tape.
I am going to try just rolling the shades on and hope for them to stick, then wait for the new springs to arrive and hope everything plays nice together. Normally I don’t pull the shades all the way down but my wife does. I will hope that there will be enough wraps to keep them on.
We had the solid rear shade come detached from the rear window shade assembly and found it crumpled behind the couch.
I took the entire valance and shade assembly down since I was also needing to replace the spring mechanism and just reattached the shade material and carefully rolled it back on to the tube. Seems to have held up so far too.
